The only inhabitants were three chickens....
While camping on the Island of Unst in the Shetland Islands, we came upon a very isolated and seemingly abandoned cottage..
As we approached the cottage, we discerned three chickens standing in the open doorway with a starling to keep them company. As we drew a little closer, the three chickens disappeared inside the house, only to peep out at us a few moments later. It seemed so incongruous as the nearest occupied farmhouse was quite some distance away.
We did not venture in and just admired the old house from the outside, with the wonderful texture of its crumbling stone work. But the mystery remains - what were the chickens doing there - and was the house really abandoned?
